How to Save Money on Haircuts
by Renee Pfeil, May 2010

1. Locate a Beauty School in your area by linking to beautyschoolsdirectory.com and entering your state and city.  I have been frequenting a local beauty school to get my haircuts since I  was single over 20 years ago.  And once my children started requiring haircuts done by a professional, I started taking all four of them to our local school in Delaware.  Our family of six can go all at once, and be taken all at the same time because of the number of students on the floor.

A simple haircut costs around $8.00, and a shampoo, haircut, and style (including blowers, curling irons, and hair products) costs around $13 a head.  You can't beat that cost!  Each student takes their time to do the cut right, and they are supervised through the whole process.  Moms, you can get manis and pedis for under $5 each, and hair colors with shampoo and cut are under $40!  Super Cuts charges $15.95 in our area for just a wet cut: no shampoo - no style!  Six heads would cost us nearly $100, while at the beauty school it will be under $60!

2.Try doing the haircuts at home,
at least until the kids are preteen age and their styles get more sophisticated.  My husband Richard bought me a Haircut Kit  for under $40  probably 16 years ago, and I've been using it ever since.  I had absolutely NO haircutting experience prior to that purchase, but the 20 minute "how to" video actually taught me how to give my girls a simple bob hair style, and I learned how to give a layered cut to my son.  Believe it or not I got so good at it that my son still prefers me to cut his hair and he's nearly 13 yrs old!  If I remember correctly, the video also showed how to give haircuts to the African American child, and they looked quite stylish.  If I could learn the techniques, anyone could!

3. This next tip involves looking for salons
that offer coupons or other ways to earn free haircuts. Supercuts for one, offers coupons straight to your email once you sign up to receive them.  They will send coupons for each person in the family that you register.

Also, they make use of the punchcard system, where after every 6 haircuts, you receive a free haircut the next time.  Salons often offer discounts and coupons in the back of phone books, clipper magazines, and grocery store receipts.  Look for them!

4.Try the book, Haircutting for Dummies
It offers simple advice and techniques for the do-it-yourself who wants to save money and do them at home.

5.  Great bangs require regular upkeep.
But you don't need to head to the salon every time your bangs need a trim. In my area, bang trims cost $8 a person. Here's how to cut your bangs from the comfort of your own home.
6.  Stretch the Time in Between Visits
Just because your stylist says you should come in every six weeks, doesn't mean you have to. Stretch the time between cuts, and you'll save big. Just how big? Having your hair cut every eight weeks instead of every six shaves two visits off of your yearly total. Not too shabby.

7.  Donate Hair and Get a Free Cut
Many salons host free haircut events to benefit Locks of Love and similar organizations. Locate one of these events in your area; donate your hair; and you'll help others while helping yourself to a free cut.
