All About Spider Veins
Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that are also twisted and turning. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin as well. Like varicose veins, they are most often seen on the legs or face.

Causes of Varicose Veins and Spider Veins

A number of factors predispose a person to varicose and spider veins. These include:

    * Heredity (passed on from a parent to a child through genes)
    * Occupations that involve a lot of standing, such as seen among nurses, beauticians, teachers, and factory workers
    * Obesity
    * Hormonal influences during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
    * The use of birth control pills
    * Postmenopausal hormonal replacement
    * A history of blood clots
    * Conditions that cause increased pressure in the abdomen including tumors, constipation, and externally worn garments like girdles

Healthy veins carry blood to the heart through a series of one-way valves. These valves allow blood to flow in the right direction from superficial veins to deeper viens and to the heart. The vessels are surrounded by muscles which contract and help pump blood to the heart. Normally the veins have a one-way valve to prevent backflow. However, defective valves allow blood to flow backward and pool inside the vein. As blood pools within the vein, pressure builds and the vessel wall weakens. As a result, the vein tends to bulge and twist. Depending on the size of the blood vessel and extent of swelling, the result is a spider vein or varicose vein.

What are spider veins?

Small "spider veins" also can appear on the skin's surface. These may look like short, fine lines, "starburst" clusters, or a web-like maze. Spider veins are most common in the thighs, ankles, and feet. They may also appear on the face.
Who gets varicose and spider veins?

Varicose and spider veins can occur in men or women of any age, but most frequently affect women of childbearing years and older. Family history of the problem and aging increase one's tendency to develop varicose and spider veins.
What causes varicose and spider veins?

The causes of varicose and spider veins are not entirely understood. In some instances, the absence or weakness of valves in the veins, which prevent the backward flow of blood away from the heart, may cause the poor circulation. In other cases, weaknesses in the vein walls may cause the pooling of the blood. Less commonly, varicose veins are caused by such diseases as phlebitis (inflammation of the veins) or congenital abnormalities of the veins. Venous disease is generally progressive and cannot be prevented entirely. However, in some cases, wearing support hosiery and maintaining normal weight and regular exercise may be beneficial.

Simple Treatments Available

Most spider  veins and varicose veins don't need to be treated, unless they result in ulcers, bleeding, and phlebitis, or because you want them removed for cosmetic reasons

The simplest treatment for spider veins and varicose veins is to pull on a pair of support stockings. Sometimes called compression stockings, they improve circulation and relieve pain and discomfort in the legs. You can find them in knee-high or pantyhose style at surgical supply stores and some pharmacies.

Losing weight and walking regularly can ease the symptoms of spider veins and varicose veins. If swelling is a problem, try a low-salt diet to reduce water retention.

Whenever possible, prop up your legs with a pillow or recliner, so they rest at or above the level of your heart.

Prevention Is The Best Medicine

Getting plenty of exercise is the best way to ward off spider veins and varicose veins. Exercise helps keep your weight under control and your leg muscles toned, so your blood will flow freely.

 If your job keeps you on your feet, stretch your leg muscles often to increase circulation. If your constantly sitting at a desk, take frequent walking breaks to keep circulation going.  Above all, try NOT to cross your legs while sitting.

And if you're pregnant, try to sleep on your left side rather than your back.
